i am continuously getting errors when opening an unmodified civ3.shp (apart from rename to civfar.shp). i just thought i'd say, i dont have a clue why its doing it though.

Options -> Preferences -> Loading & Saving.

Make sure OS SHP Builder Offset Way is set instead of Supra Load. It might load slower, but it works in all cases.
